The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz surrounding the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team might be building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
