Right-leaning responses to the limited disclosure of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the political left wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that preceded the legislative vote to enact a law requiring the files' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete release. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy binders of materials that included no new information.
